100 Days Until the New Year. My Resolution is...

(As of Sept. 23rd it’s only 100 days to the new year!)

I know you’re probably thinking, “What? A New Year’s Resolution in September? What’s going on?”

I know. I know. Just hear me out!

On January 1st, millions mark the day as a fresh start to make resolutions like exercising more, losing weight, or eating healthier. Then by January 31st (just four weeks later), many feel discouraged because the scale isn’t budging, and the late-night snacking is still happening.

While I’m not here to analyze why resolutions fail, I’ve noticed something from my clients and gym participants: building healthy habits is an excellent goal, but it takes time. Some people are faster at adapting new habits, while others need more patience. And then there are those who get discouraged when the results don’t show up as fast as they’d like.

For them, I say: Don’t wait until January 1st to make that healthy resolution. Start now and try the following:

  • Think about what you REALLY want to achieve (lose weight, exercise more, etc.). Now write it down. Use this free Daily Action Planner to help you easily plan your goals and set priorities.
  • Make it specific: “I want to lose 25 lbs” or “I’d like to go to the gym 3 times a week.”
  • Break it down into mini-goals: Instead of focusing on the big goal, break it into smaller, manageable steps. For example, aim for 1 lb of weight loss per week or commit to trying one new fitness class this month. Small, consistent actions will keep you motivated and lead to long-term success.
  • Seeing is believing: Print a 3-month calendar and put a check mark on each day you accomplish a mini-goal.
  • Be accountable: Tell your family, friends, and colleagues about your goals. Ask them to follow up with you. Even better, use the Accountability Contract! It’s a simple way to commit to your goals with someone you trust and make sure you stay on track.

The beauty of starting now is that you’re ahead of the game! By January 1st, you’ll already have built solid habits and started seeing results. That early momentum will give you the motivation to keep pushing toward your healthy goals in the New Year and beyond.
