Name: D. Burris Improvement: 33 lbs. Weight Loss / 5% Body Fat Reduction Time: 6 months Program: 2024 Holidays Challenge / 2025 New Year Challenge What was your biggest challenge / obstacle (s)? My biggest challenge was maintaining focus and counting the details in all of the areas including nutrition, strength, flexibility, and walking. For example, putting dressing on a salad and saying oh, that's about 2 tablespoons, when it is 1/2 cup. With walking, actually counting the distance instead of estimating as I was always off at least 1/4 of a mile. What motivated you to stay on the course? The competition and successes all along the way! I love challenges and competition, even within myself to lift a little more weight, walk a little further, or succeed at a new activity such as completing a 5K. Each week, there is always a success, whether adding one more mile to walking, or even a "you've got this" from Rami when I checked in but wasn't able to compete the weeks goals. or gained some weight. Did your diet change? If so, How? Please be detailed! Yes, absolutely! It took time, but I eat cleaner. I eat more fresh fruits, vegetables, and meats and less processed foods. I also do not use as many sauces and cheeses, and decreased my portion sizes. So, for breakfast I eat oatmeal instead of a pop tart, one piece of guacamole toast instead of two, and a small portion of yogurt and nuts with a larger portion of fruit. I also will eat eggs with vegetables instead of with toast and bacon. My lunches are half of the portion of my previous supper, a salad with meat, hummus and vegetables, ,or a lettuce wrap sandwich. I started eating a piece of fruit midafternoon such as an apple which curbs my appetite until supper and keeps me from snacking on chips, cookies or whatever else is around and easy to get. For supper, I always have a meat and vegetable, and still have rice, or potatoes. I am still working to move my largest meal to lunch instead of supper. I have quit eating snacks after supper and if I want something, eat a sugar free popsicle, frozen grapes or small portion of a ninja protein creami. What advice could you give to others that want the same results? Stick with it! Celebrate the small gains, and allow others to help in the journey. Even if you go into the gym to do 2 sets of 15, and only had the energy or mindset to do 1 set, celebrate that and you were in the gym. How is this experience going to affect you going forward? My hope is that my mindset has changed and because I feel better overall and like the way I feel when I eat better, and exercise, that I will keep this a part of my life. I also like the challenges and competitions, so I foresee myself staying in some form of competition, whether golfing in a league, participating in 5 K's, or being a part of a gym with a group program. |
