In celebration of Heart Walk, here are some amazing benefits of this simple, yet effective, exercise and suggestions to make it fun and enjoyable.

Benefits of Walking:
  • A low-intensity exercise that's great for the heart
  • Lowers bad cholesterol
  • Lowers high blood pressure
  • A great way to burn extra calories and control weight
  • Helps manage diabetes
  • Great stress relief
  • Improves flexibility and posture
  • Helps strengthen legs and back muscles

Advantages of Walking:
  • Easiest, simplest way to stay active
  • No equipment needed (just a good pair of comfortable walking shoes)
  • Can be performed indoors or outdoors
  • Can be done virtually everywhere and anytime
  • Did I say it s FREE?

How to Get the Most Out of Your Walk?
Before you step out, follow the steps below to get the most benefits out of your walk:
  • Wear well-cushioned socks
  • Wear a comfortable pair of walking shoes or sneakers. Don t tie them too tight
  • Make sure your shoes (and clothes) have bright reflective materials if you plan to walk at night
  • Dress appropriately according to the weather
  • Avoid exercising during the hottest time of the day (usually around 12-4PM during summer and 11-3PM during winter)
  • Stay hydrated. Take a bottle of water with you
  • Stretch your muscles before, during, and after each walk. Follow the below simple stretches for 15-30 seconds each.

Fun Ways to Spice-Up Your Walks:
  • Start a walking club / group with you colleagues, friends, family, and neighbors
  • Take pooch for a walk

  • Hit the beach (Do you want to double up on calories burned? Walk on soft sand instead of hard sand)
  • Go to the mall and count how many laps you can complete in 30 minutes
  • There’s an App for that! Look for an app that can make your walk more fun and challenging. There are many free ones available. Check with your local wireless carrier

At the end of the day, it’s not about how fast you go or how far you walk, it’s about showing up for yourself, one step at a time.

Every lap around the block, every hallway walk, every “let’s park a little farther” moment adds up to something powerful. You’re not just walking, you’re building strength, clearing your mind, and joining a movement that’s bigger than all of us.
