Consistency Isn’t the Problem

I have been meaning to write this post for a long time. It's about something I hear  almost daily with clients and patients when they feel challenged with their routines.

One of the main obstacles they frequently mention is “Consistency.” We tend to start a routine or a diet with great intentions but hit a wall with “consistency.”

Here are a few examples:
  • A client starts strong with workouts but the moment work deadlines pile up, exercise is the first thing to go.
  • A bariatric patient does well with food tracking in the beginning, but after a stressful week, they slip back into old habits and stop logging meals.
  • Another client makes it to the gym regularly for two months, then one family trip or illness derails the routine completely, and it’s tough to get back on track.
  • Someone buys all the healthy groceries, preps meals on Sunday, but by Thursday the takeout menus creep back in because “life got too busy.”

Sounds familiar?

Here is my take on consistency. I don’t believe consistency is truly the problem.

Every single person I work with is already highly consistent in many other areas of life, areas they may not even view as “achievements.” For example:
  • Professionals who’ve built a career and continue to show up day after day to do the same job. That’s consistency.
  • How about driving? We automatically signal, stop at red lights, and check mirrors every time we get behind the wheel. That’s consistency.
  • Brushing your teeth every morning and night, without debate or motivation needed. That’s consistency.
  • Paying bills on time each month to keep the lights on. That’s consistency.
  • Parents tucking their kids into bed night after night, even when tired. That’s consistency.

You get the point.

The truth is, it’s not that you lack consistency. It’s that your focus hasn’t been fully directed toward your health. You already prove consistent every single day in countless ways. The challenge isn’t about learning a brand-new skill; it’s about choosing to apply the skill you already have to your own well-being. When you shift your attention, the same energy that helps you succeed at work, care for your family, or keep life on track can be redirected toward building healthier habits. You already know how to show up, you just need to decide that your health is also worth showing up for too.

So, how do you start a routine that can turn into a consistent behavior?

The great coach Vince Lombardi once said: “Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence.”

Starting is excellent, but start small. Never underestimate the power of small, daily actions.
Expect interruptions.
Expect delays.
Expect mistakes.
Expect imperfection. Progress isn’t about being perfect, it’s about showing up again and again.

Here are a few tips to make it stick:
  • Begin with 2 workouts a week instead of 6.
  • Prep one healthy meal at a time instead of overhauling your whole kitchen.
  • Go for a 10-minute walk daily instead of hours on the treadmill.
  • Track progress weekly, not daily, so you see the bigger picture.
  • Always remind yourself of the real reason you started.
  • Pair your new habit with an existing one (stretch after brushing your teeth, Review your goals while your morning coffee is brewing).
  • Lay out your workout clothes the night before so there’s less resistance in the morning.
  • Set realistic sleep goals—sometimes the best workout starts with a good night’s rest.
  • Keep healthy snacks visible and easy, while hiding or not buying the ones that derail you.
  • Celebrate the “small wins” like completing week one instead of waiting until the big finish line.

Your health is like a savings account. Every workout, healthy meal, or good night’s sleep is a deposit. You don’t notice the impact after one or two deposits, but over time, those deposits grow into something powerful. That’s consistency in action.

Your body deserves the same mindset. It’s your most valuable investment. When you care for it with exercise, meditation, proper sleep, recovery, and even laughter, you’re investing in a life that is fuller, healthier, and more enjoyable. That investment pays off in more energy, sharper focus, improved mood, and better relationships with the people around you.

Start small. Stay steady. You’re already more consistent than you think.

And remember, whatever your goal or motivation is, it ultimately will make you better, and when you are better, everything around you gets better too.

Your Trainer,
Rami
