Choosing the Perfect Activity Tracker

Embarking on a fitness journey is exciting, and having the right activity tracker can make all the difference. These devices have come a long way from their humble beginnings (Does anyone remember those clicky pedometers we used to get in a McDonald's Happy Meal?)

Back in the 1960s, Japanese professor Dr. Yoshiro Hatano introduced the manpo-kei—which translates to "10,000 steps meter"—a simple pedometer designed to count steps and encourage people to move more. This idea quickly became a global fitness benchmark, but early pedometers had their limitations. They could only track steps, often miscounted non-walking movements, and lacked any real health insights like heart rate monitoring or sleep tracking.

Fast forward to today, and activity trackers have evolved into powerful health companions. Modern devices not only track steps but also monitor heart rate, sleep quality, calorie burn, and even stress levels. They sync with smartphones, provide personalized health insights, and deliver real-time feedback during workouts. Whether you're looking to stay motivated, improve your fitness, or simply be more mindful of your activity levels, a good tracker can be a game-changer.

Nowadays, almost all smartwatches double as activity trackers, offering built-in health tracking features. However, if you're looking for a dedicated activity tracker—one focused purely on fitness without the distractions of a smartwatch—this guide is for you.

In this post, I'll go over what to look for when buying an activity tracker and what to avoid so you can find the best fit for your fitness journey.
What to Look For in an Activity Tracker

When choosing an activity tracker, consider the features that align with your fitness goals and daily routine:
  • GPS Tracking: Ideal for outdoor activities like running, cycling, and hiking, allowing you to map routes and measure distances.
  • Water Resistance: Essential if swimming is part of your routine or if you need a device that can handle sweat and rain.
  • Sleep Tracking: Monitors sleep duration and quality, helping you improve your rest and recovery.
  • Step and Calorie Tracking: Provides daily insights into your movement and energy expenditure.
  • Smartphone Integration: Syncs with your phone to deliver notifications and store data for long-term tracking.
  • Long Battery Life: Ensures your tracker lasts through even the longest days without frequent recharging.
  • Heart Rate Monitoring: Tracks your pulse during workouts and rest, helping you stay within your target heart rate zones.
What to Avoid

Not all activity trackers are created equal. Be mindful of these common pitfalls:
  • Paying for Unused Features: High-end models come with advanced features like ECG monitoring and stress tracking, but if you won’t use them, you’re better off with a simpler (and cheaper) model.
  • Uncomfortable Design: If the tracker is bulky or uncomfortable, you’re less likely to wear it consistently. Look for a lightweight design that fits your wrist well.
  • Poor App Support: The tracker’s app is just as important as the device itself. Make sure it’s user-friendly, provides clear insights, and syncs reliably.
How Much Should You Spend?

Activity trackers come in a range of prices, so it’s important to find one that fits your budget and needs:
  • Basic Models ($25–$100): Track steps, basic activities, and sleep patterns. Ideal for beginners or casual users.
  • Mid-Range Models ($100–$250): Include heart rate monitoring, GPS, and more advanced metrics. Perfect for fitness enthusiasts.
  • High-End Models ($250+): Offer comprehensive health tracking, premium materials, and smartwatch features like notifications and apps. Best for serious athletes or those seeking advanced insights.

TL;DR

Must-Have Features:
  • Step and Calorie Tracking
  • Heart rate monitoring
  • GPS
  • water resistance
  • sleep tracking
  • Smartphone Integration
  • long battery life

Avoid:
  • Overpaying for extra features
  • uncomfortable designs
  • poor app support.

Price Guide:
  • Basic: $25–$100 (steps, sleep, basic tracking)
  • Mid-Range: $100–$250 (heart rate, GPS, advanced tracking)
  • High-End: $250+ (full health tracking, smartwatch features)
I’ve seen firsthand how easy it is to lose momentum when life gets busy. Having a tracker keeps you accountable, reminds you to move, and gives you that little push when motivation dips.

Remember, it’s not about perfection—it’s about progress, and sometimes all it takes is a simple buzz on your wrist to get back on track.

Stay Awesome!

Hi Rami,

What smartwatch do you recommend for people who aren't great with tech? Eg. something very easy to use? And for heart rate monitoring, sleep and calorie tracking,

Thanks

Jason.

Hi Jason,

I find Amazfit Band 7 (you can find it on Amazon) to be very easy to use, very affordable and packed with the features , including the ones you mentioned.
